Organic Baobab Fruit Powder

Fibre: healthy digestive system . blood glucose control . low GI . reduce blood cholesterol levels . weight control . prevent some bowel cancers

Dietary fibre is the part of the food your body cannot breakdown and digest. There are two types of dietary fibre; soluble fibre and insoluble fibre.  The main role of fibre is to keep the digestive system healthy and keep you regular.

Baobab pulp was found to consist of more than 50% total fibre by weight.  The majority of the baobab powder fibre is the soluble fibre.

A recommended amount of 2 Tbsp of baobab daily will provide you with 10g of fibre – over 1/3 of your daily intake.

Total % fibre                     Soluble fibre                    Insoluble fiber
Baobab powder                   50%                                 77%                                       23%
Oat bran                              15%                                 50 %                                      50 %
Flaxseeds                            30 %                                30 %                                      70 %
Psyllium seed husks            80% fibre                         66%                                      34 %

Soluble Fibre

  • blood glucose control: baobab’s high fibre and low GI helps regulate blood glucose by slowing down the rate of digestion, which produces a steady state of energy and reduces the possibility of an insulin surge.
  • blood cholesterol levels:  Soluble fibres can also help lower LDL (“bad”) blood cholesterol by interfering with the absorption of dietary cholesterol.
  • weight control: The soluble fibre also extends the time a person feels satisfied or ‘full’ . This may assist with weight management (not weight loss).  High-fibre foods tend to have a lower energy density, which means they provide fewer kilojoules per gram of food.

Insoluble Fibre

  • maintaining a healthy bowel.
  • it may also help in the prevention of some bowel cancers such as colon and rectal cancers.
Australian recommendation for adults : approximately 25–30g of fibre daily.

Natural pectin content acts as a natural thickener when used in cooking and foods.

Prebiotic Function & Low Fructose

Baobab powder is considered to have a natural pectin content of over 50% (56.2g/100g).
Natural pectin is one of the highest soluble fibre sources in Baobab powder.

Natural Pectin:

  • prebiotic: gut health may benefit from natural pectin as a prebiotic, encouraging growth of friendly intestinal bacteria and a strong immune system.
  • heavy metal chelation and detoxification: pectin may assist in these processes.
  • immune response and allergy prevention: prebiotics nourish the probiotics found in the intestinal gut, with some studies suggesting that this might have such far-reaching effects as improving the overall immune response and preventing allergy development. It is thought that the majority, nearly 70%, of our immune system is around our gut.  So a healthy gut means a healthy immune system.
  • low fructose but high fibre: naturally occurring pectin from baobab fruit powder is low in fructose compared to other high fibre fruits like apples that have high fructose content accompanying the pectin. Baobab is said to have fructose content of about 4g/100g.
  • natural thickener: natural pectin content acts as a natural thickener when used in cooking and foods.

No statistical difference was found.

Hydrating Electrolytes

Baobab powder is considered to be a great rehydration agent due to the high electrolyte profile, namely potassium at 2270mg/100g and magnesium at 148mg/100g.

A study compared the efficacy of a local solution made from the fruit of the baobab with the WHO (World Health Organisation) standard solution for treatment of dehydration. The results showed that although the WHO solution was superior, there was no statistical difference between these two solutions. The solution was effective in treating the dehydration. You can simply add Baobab powder to water and rehydrate throughout the day.

Alkalinising Minerals

Baobab fruit powder with significant source of iron, potassium and magnesium, are all important alkalising minerals to promote correct body pH and can help bring modern diets into better balance.

Calcium

Baobab powder is a great plant source of calcium, which is great for vegans or those who do not desire dairy.
Baobab delivers twice as much as calcium as milk gram for gram.
Calcium is an essential component in the production of digestive enzymes.
For adults in Australia, the daily requirement is about 1000mg.

Baobab contains 339mg/100g, so for a 2Tbsp(20mg) dose you would get 67.8mg of calcium, 6.78%.

Magnesium

Baobab powder is a rich natural source of magnesium, containing more than twice the amount of magnesium than leafy greens and 5 times the amount of magnesium found in avocado (gram for gram).  Magnesium is a cofactor for more than 300 enzyme systems  it’s a key factor in maintaining your energy levels, it helps you relax and sleep and is crucial to heart and muscle health.

The recommended daily intake for magnesium is a requirement of 4.5mg/kg/day.

Baobab powder at 2 Tbsp (20g) = 148mg of magnesium, about 5 times that of an avocado.

Potassium

Baobab powder is a great plant source of potassium

Potassium is a mineral that is essential for a healthy nervous system and helps muscles communicate that the body needs to work normally.  It also helps contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure. Potassium is one of the minerals that aid in rehydration.

Baobab contains 2270mg/100g, so for a 2 Tbsp (20g) serving you would get 454mg for potassium. This is 4 times the potassium in bananas mg to mg.

Iron

Iron is an important mineral that is involved in the transport of oxygen in the blood. This is essential for providing energy for daily life, as well as its involvement in enzymes, including those involved in energy production.

The absorption into the body of this plant based iron is enhanced by the natural content  of vitamin C found in the baobab fruit powder.

Superior Phytonutrients

The ORAC  value for 2Tbsp of baobab powder is 33,080 μmole TE/g, which is twice that of Acai berry (15730 μmole TE/g;  (786.5 μmole TE/g).

Polyphenols

Baobab powder is considered to have a high polyphenol content with a total polyphenol value of 26.9 mg G.A.E Ig.

Polyphenols are a large class of chemical compounds found in plants (phytochemicals). There are over 4,000 polyphenol compounds.

These include;

  • flavonoids
  • bioflavonoids
  • flavanols and tannins.

Many are powerful antioxidants and can neutralise free-radicals.

Polyphenols have been found to possess a variety of potential health benefits;
  • reduces starch digestion and glycaemic response which may help maintain stable energy levels
    • Dr Lisa Ryan, department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Monsah University Publication (2013, on baobab and polyphenol content)
  • cancer prevention
  • reducing the risk of getting heart disease.
  • lower LDL cholesterol, or “bad” cholesterol, in the body

Antioxidants

Baobab fruits are exceptionally rich in antioxidants, and are said to have one of the highest antioxidant values of any known fruit.

Our baobab powder grows in Sub-Saharan Southern Africa where the unique properties of the environment and soil boost the fruit’s antioxidant capacity – 5 times the amount of antioxidants of baobab grown in other regions in Africa and other parts of the world.

Antioxidants are compounds in foods that neutralise the unstable molecules called free radicals.  Free radicals occur when there is oxidation in the human body. These chemicals have been linked to diseases such as heart and liver disease and cancer.
Some studies have shown that antioxidants can minimize wrinkles and reduce the signs of aging.

Studies have shown that Baobab has at least 3 times the vitamin C or oranges with some studies demonstrating up to 6 times the amount of Vitamin C than oranges.

Vitamin C

Baobab is a whole food vitamin C and there are greater benefits in getting vitamins from whole food than from concentrated supplements. This 100% pure baobab powder is not heat treated, so all the Vitamin C and enzymes are preserved.  We also ensure minimal exposure to sunlight, which is known to cause vitamin C degradation.

The baobab fruit is considered one of the very best food sources of vitamin C in the world, with only a handful of foods – including kakadu plums, camu camu, acerola, and rosehips – beating this super fruit in terms of vitamin C content.

  • helps to contribute to normal functioning of the immune system, nervous system & is involved in energy production.
  • essential for numerous functions in the human body including the manufacture of collagen ( for bones, tendons, blood vessels, skin, cartilage, heart valves, teeth and gums and many other tissues) and for tissue repair.
  • Vitamin C is an antioxidant which helps protect cells in the body from damage by free radicals.

Studies have shown that Baobab has at least 3 times the vitamin C or oranges with some studies demonstrating up to 6 times the amount of Vitamin C than oranges.

Adults need about 45 mg of vitamin C per day and any excess amount is excreted.
A recommended amount of 2Tbsp of baobab will provide you with 44.2g – 98.2% of your daily requirement.

Vitamin B

Our Baobab powder has absolutely no processing, which can affect vitamin B content, so all of our baobab powder’s vitamin B content is available for absorption.
There are eight B-group vitamins, which are essential for bodily functions such as energy production and making red blood cells.
The body uses energy-yielding nutrients such as carbohydrates, fat and protein for fuel. The B-group vitamins help the body to use that fuel and are therefore contribute to endurance and energy.
